Bois Hall Farm is located in Navestock Nr Brentwood and was a joint venture for the Design & Development of the existing Grade 2 listed Agricultural Buildings to form 3no spectacular residences finished to the highest detail in joining the beauty of the existing structure with modern finishes
The barns were derelict and had not been used for over 40 years. The walls were bowing and had to be pinned back together using a steel frame inside the walls.
We had to work very closely with the Local Heritage Officer in various aspects and restrictions of the conversion works whilst using our own initiative to ensure the character of the buildings were preserved:
The original timber work from the eighteenth century is still in place and in good condition. It has been cleaned off by water blasting which is far gentler than sand blasting. After thorough drying out is has had chemical treatment to deal with any pests, followed by two coats of sealant.
- Much of the original timber work from the eighteenth century had to be retained and has been restored making architectural features to internal and external areas of the building. The process of using a water blasting method which is far gentler than sand blasting and after thorough drying out it has had chemical treatment and then a sealer applied.
- The requirements for specific window styles were very strict and we installed slim profile heritage style windows to comply
- We used wooden dowels in the timber structure to hide the bolts used to pin the structure securely
- When pointing, we used traditional lime mortar mixes from the period
- We found ways to keep a lot of original brickwork on show and where we had to repair or build new areas we sourced salvage bricks from reclaim yards all over Essex and Suffolk
